| What is Hyperthroidism? Hyperthyroidism is a condition where there is an increase in the activity of the thyroid gland that can lead to an increased rate of metabolism. An increased metabolism is caused by an overproduction of the metabolic hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3). Both of these hormones are formed in the thyroid gland. When there is an increase in T3 and T4 in the body, TSH (thyroid stimulation hormone) which is produced in the pituitary gland will be decreased because these hormones are counteractive. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' Disease. |
